Tomorrow’s Technology Leaders Scholarship

A joint TIA and Carnegie Mellon University - Australia Initiative

The TIA and Carnegie Mellon University - Australia are delighted to present the inaugural technology scholarship involving a Masters of Science in Information Technology. This prestigious scholarship can be undertaken as a one or two year course either full or part time.

Valued at more than $120,00 the scholarship is a joint TIA and Carnegie Mellon University - Australia initiative. The scholarship includes two Masters degrees, each with a value of up to $76,000 in the area of Information Technology and can be undertaken as a one or two year course with many flexible study options.

The value of completing additional degree qualifications was discussed in The Advertiser, 12th March, 2011 in an article by Cara Jenkin and Sam Kelton:

“More graduates are returning to university after finishing their bachelor degree to increase their chances of getting employed and earning a high salary, figures show. Graduate Careers Australia’s annual research finds 19% of graduates were in further full-time study four months after finishing their degree in 2010, up from 18% the previous year. Graduates see the expense of taking on postgraduate studies – courses cost upwards of $30,000 – as an investment in their future.

Access Economics’ report for the Federal Government last year found demand for workers with a doctorate would increase 3.2% a year until 2020. The median annual salary for postgraduates in 2010 was $68,600, compared to $50,000 for those with a bachelor degree.”

Recent Carnegie Mellon University - Australia graduate Christian Bertram obtained a significant career promotion midway through studying a Master of Science in Information Technology degree.

“Studying a Masters degree at Carnegie Mellon University - Australia definitely gave me an edge over other candidates when I applied for and successfully obtained my current position as Enterprise Architect with the Department for Transport, Energy and Infrastructure in the Office of the Chief Information Officer,” said Mr Bertram.

“More importantly though, the Carnegie Mellon University - Australia Masters degree gave me a new strategic outlook in how I view the workplace. This was critical for me as it helped achieve one of my personal career goals of making a transition from having an operational – hands on approach to a more influential tactical outlook,” explained Mr Bertram.

Recently I was playing Snakes and Ladders with my children and it struck me that my career so far had been similar to the principle in this game.

“I feel that gaining a Masters degree was comparable to climbing a ladder in Snakes and Ladders in that I could fast track my career. I still reached the same destination but I was able to get there faster,” said Mr Bertram.

“I originally completed a certificate in Software Systems Development, at Carnegie Mellon University - Australia. This influenced me to investigate further study there as I was extremely impressed the first time around,” added Mr Bertram.

“Having access to knowledgeable lecturing staff who are well versed in industry and experts in their field, and being able to study in the heart of Adelaide  made all the difference,” said Mr Bertram.

Carnegie Mellon University - Australia seeks to attract the very best and brightest students from around the globe. To this end their competitive scholarship and awards program allows them to remove hurdles which may otherwise prevent deserving future leaders from attaining a prestigious Carnegie Mellon University degree.
