The Technology Industry Association Skills Program provides industry leadership for the workforce development of technology sectors. Established in 2005, it has developed into a highly productive business unit of the technology Industry Association, addressing the skills-related issues of the industry.
At present the TIA Skills Program is one of the two industry initiatives in place that supplies information to secondary school teachers, career counsellors and students regarding opportunities within the technology industry in South Australia.
The professional development of teachers and improved access of teachers to resources, industry contacts and projects are important objectives of the Skills Program and the NAMIG initiative. The benefits of closer ties with industry has enabled delivery of specific training plans.
Moreover, the Skills Program is consistent with the overall objective stipulated in the Department of Education and Children's Services (DECS) Strategic Direction for Science and Mathematics 2003-2006 report. The strategy stresses the need to attract and retain high quality teachers of science and mathematics and build partnerships with the wider community.
Tertiary institutions also provide information to students on the opportunities available within the electronics industry through their own mechanisms and directly or indirectly throughthis program. Tertiary institutions are informed about the industry needs through inter alia their respective Industry Advisory Boards, liaison and association of academic staff with the industry in various capacities, university and TAFE open days, and direct liaison by companies with the universities/TAFE on their skill requirements.
The TIA Skills Program is managed by Skills and Workforce Manager Andrea.
