TIA Skills Project

South Australian technology companies are experiencing increased difficulty in finding electronics and IT engineering graduates to fill job vacancies.

The Technology Industry Association's Skills Project aims to reverse this by supplying secondary school teachers, career counsellors and students with information about the SA technology industry.

At the moment we're running electronics workshops and have just finished a suite of nanotechnology hands on workshops. There is nowhere else for teachers to gain a grasp of electronics to enable them to give their students a taste of this technology. Many teachers are also unaware of the diversity of South Australia's technology industry or that maths is a prerequisite for entry into  relevant tertiary courses.

Once they're armed with the classroom skills for technology lessons and general industry knowledge they become industry ambassadors. The TIA is concerned about changes to the new SACE system that mean students choose only four subjects, instead of five in Year 12. This may encourage students to drop out of maths studies.

However, now that our program is gaining more awareness among teachers (more than 300 teachers have taken part in TIA workshops) we are quietly confident that they have compelling arguments to impart to students to ensure more Year 12s select maths.

Teachers interested in our upcoming career night can contact the the TIA on 8272 5222 or register online.
